Zea Mays Printmaking Studio

Zea Mays Printmaking is a professional printmaking studio, located in western Massachusetts. Since its founding in 2000, ZMP’s mission has been to provide a space and community to learn, create and promote prints made with the safest processes available. Zea Mays Printmaking collaborates with artists, studios and schools around the world to share innovations in non-toxic and sustainable printmaking.

The 6000 sq. ft, state-of-the-art printmaking facilities provide studio access for over 100 artist members, residencies, exhibitions and educational programs.

More information can be found at https://www.zeamaysprintmaking.com/about/

Zea Mays Printmaking welcomes artists working in the following printmaking methods:

  • Monotype
  • Etching using BIG ground and airbrush aquatint
  • Screen Printing
  • Photopolymer Intaglio
  • Woodcut and Linocut
  • Polyester Plate, wood and paper lithography

We are not able to host artists working in cyanotype or stone lithography. All chemistry must be cleared with the Facilities Manager before it can be performed at the studio and must adhere to our standards of safety and sustainability.

The Annex is equipped with a Takach etching press (39.5″ x 72″), large work tables, flat file storage, a sink and plenty of wall space for work in progress. We are happy to bring in additional equipment and tools as needed including a large hotplate, large rollers and hand brayers, screen printing press, drying boards.

Residency artists have access to all of the other facilities in the studio during our open hours. These include:

  • airbrush aquatint booth
  • vertical etching tanks with Ferric Chloride mordant and Copper Sulfate Saline mordant
  • plate shear
  • photopolymer darkroom with NuArc K-1 exposure unit (for plates up to 18” x 24”)
  • screenprinting darkroom with LED exposure unit for screens up to 27” x 34”
  • screenprinting washout sink with power washer
  • Showcard letterpress with wooden type
  • Digital Lab (computer, scanner, Epson 4900 printer)
  • Print dryer and flattener
  • Light table

If you are interested in sharing your work or talking about your process, ZMP can arrange an open studio for members during your stay. The Instagram account, @zeamaysprintmaking, has 5000+ followers and growing. Collaboration is welcomed on posts and stories to share your progress.
